Idea Audience Feedback

Basic Idea – Audience Feedback

Kodaline – Love Like This (Acoustic)

·         Two people getting ready to perform- a boy and a girl

·         Set in the 50s- exaggerated mise-en-scene, costume/hair/makeup to fit the style of the typical 50s

·         Sepia style effect added over the top to add a authentic, old look

·         Multiple close ups of them e.g. close up of eyeliner

·         First verse: Make up

·         Chorus: Hair

·         Second verse: Costume

·         Until the end: The two actors performing on a stage, heavy lighting, all in slow motion to fit in with the slow pace of the song. Also, the routine will be based upon dancing within the 50s to ensure this time era is portrayed to the audience

·         End shot of an old woman watching the performance on television, colour is very vivid now to show it’s back in 2013- she is watching herself back without her partner linking to the lyrics.

Faye Wilding:
There seems to be a nice consistency between the song lyrics and the idea for the music video as there’s a subtle link between what’s going on in both, rather than it being obvious, which I think makes it more tasteful. The video seems well thought-out, with detail into the colour effects to create a vintage look. Overall I think the concept of this video will work and look good!

Amy Wichelow:
I like the initial ideas and think that the narrative matches the lyrics very well. The idea seems well thought out and solid. I like the old-50s style and think that it will look very effective when made into a music video. The ending is my favourite part and I think will consolidate the entire video and be a very cute finish. Well done.

Angelos Andreou:
My first impression was that your basic ideas are really good and the way the video fits in well with the slow tempo song was very well thought. I believe it is a very original and unique idea that will make your video stand out. I believe the ending of the video is a very creative ending that will touch the viewers. Very good!

Ciaran Davis:
Very creative with a great reveal at the end which will impress any audience. It should leave them smiling. The video will link very well to the lyrics of the song. The idea shouldn’t be too difficult to film as well, as long as you can get hold of decent actors with good props and costumes and replicate the 50’s look of the entire video perfectly.

Katie Norris:
I really like the idea that it is set in the 1950’s. The fact that an effect is added to emphasis this is good as well. The shots of getting ready will attract audiences as it will make us wonder what is happening and what they are preparing for which I personally like in a music video. On the whole I think this will be a very creative music video with a nice simple yet effective narrative.

Production Log - Kodaline Analysis

This week I have been working on my research tasks that I have to complete. These include further research into music video directors, research into Kodaline themselves and also analysing a music video. These research posts will help me to create my own music video because it will allow me to gain a greater understanding of the music video industry in general rather than just watching different videos and relating to them. For example, researching into music video directors will help me understand the specific styles of each director and what they like to do- then, whilst analysing music videos I will be able to identify these specific elements and relate them to others or clearly see the differences of them.

Whilst researching Kodaline themselves, it also gained me a greater understanding of the way they come to write their music, what inspires them etc. This will help me because I can focus on the lyrics- which they do- and then think of visuals that can relate and support them. As part of my research, I watched many of their videos and also live performances. I came to realise that all of their videos are very well made and they all follow a narrative which mine does so although it is different, it will still link in to their oringinal style. All of the narratives are mainly based upon the different relationships between males and females which again, relates to mine.

Analysing videos also help me within my research, I infact analysed a song by Kodaline - All I Want. This supported the idea of their 'usual' videos as being relationship based and following a narrative. Within their video, at no one moment is there someone miming the lyrics which is the case for a lot of their videos; I will keeping within this style so it is close to that of the actual artist.

Kodaline - Love Like This Lyrics

Kodaline - Love Like This Lyrics

running through the heat heart beat
you shine like silver in the sunlight
you light up my cold heart
it feels right in the sun

we're running around like love is what we found
like nothing else could matter in our lives
but wait but wait but wait
the sun'll stop shining soon
and you'll be dark in my life
it's as simple as a change of heart

a love like this wont last forever
I know that a love like this wont last forever but I
I don't mind
I don't mind at all

slipping through the night
it grows dark but you don't mind
hiding in the back streets
yeah you'll never notice me
all that I was thinking about was cleaning up my conscience
I got lost in te memory as it shakes up the corners of my heart
was it my mistake
or maybe it was just as simple as a change in your heart
just as simple as a change of heart

a love like this wont last forever
I know that a love like this wont last forever
a love like this
a love like this
a love like this
a love like this
a love like this
wont last forever

Research into Kodaline

Kodaline are a dublin-based Irish alternative rock group, originally known as 21 demands. They have been active since 2005 but are now currently signed to RCA Records. The band made chart history in March 2007 with their debut single ‘Give Me A Minute’ in the Irish Singles Chart; becoming the first independently released track to achieve a spot in the chart. In 2011 the band changed their name to Kodaline. Kodaline has four members: Stephen Garrigan – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard; Mark Prendergast – Guitar; Vinny May – Drums and Jason Boland – Bass.

In September 2012, they released their debut extended play- The Kodaline EP. This included the songs: All I Want, Lose Your Mind, Pray and Perfect World. ‘All I Want’ was highly successful having been selected as BBC Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton’s ‘Record of the Week’, it also featured in the background of television programs and Google’s ‘Year in Review’ video. As well as ‘Kodaline EP’ they also released two other extended plays; The High Hopes EP consisting of 4 songs: High Hopes, The Answer, All My Friends, All I Want (Remix) and also the Love Like This EP which included just the one track; Love like This. In December 2012, Kodaline were then nominated for the Sound of 2013 poll and on 17th June 2013, Kodaline released their first studio album ‘In a Perfect World’.

Their album ‘In A Perfect World’ has a total of 11 songs including recurring singles such as High Hopes, All I want, Love Like This and Pray. It then includes 7 new songs: One Day, Brand New Day, After The Fall, Big Bad World, All Comes Down, Talk and Way Back When. Production Log - Lyric Deconstruction

This week I have been working on my lyric analysis for my chosen song 'Love Like This - Kodaline acoustic version'. I have chosen to do it this way as I prefer to write things down which I can then change into a script on Celtx. I printed off the lyrics- making some changes as the acoustic lyrics differ from the original- and began writing in the timings of the song, the overall structure of the music video and possible shots. I have done this by repeatedly listening to the song and trying to picture the overall music video in my head. I will post my analysis of the lyrics. This will also allow me to gain a greater understanding of the song itself so I can adapt my ideas of the music video to fit this.

Analysing the lyrics themself will ensure I know exactly what the lyrics are trying to portray to an audience and then try and convery this through the visuals aswell. It has allowed me to understand any deaper meanings, connotations and denotations which are all essential whilst creating a music video.

I completed both a lyric analysis and a lyric deconstruction; although both were very similar it helped me a lot before progressing with my video.

Lyric Analysis: I looked further into the actual meanings of the lyrics, each individual lyric, the whole song, my interpretations etc. To help with this I also researched into the bands intentions; on Kodaline's website, there were the actual sheets of paper that they had written the lyrics down on with notes around the side- this was the perfect document I needed as it helped me with understanding what the band wanted to show.

Lyric deconstruction: For this, I looked more into the different sections of the song such as the verses, chorus, the build up, when the song slows down, speeds up etc. I then annotated with what I wanted to show at this particular moment and this will then help me when I create my storyboard and script.

Production Log - Initial Ideas & Research

5th July 2013
I have recently began my A2 media studies coursework. For this, we were able to chose a certain style of moving image to create ourselves. I decided to make a music video as I believe I have the right resources to do so. I began by thinking of the different genres and styles of music video I could do and what I have available to me; listed in my resource audit.

As I attend dancing lessons, I decided to incorporate this into my music video and use others from my dancing classes to help me. I also really liked the style of the 'Annie Lennox - Why' video and wanted to use this idea as well, I therefore came up with the idea of two people getting ready to perform so I can go really over the top on make up and costume. In order to make my music video different to any others, I decided to set it in the 1950s. Moving on from this, I then chose my song. I needed a song that was quite slow and had a very gentle tone so I started looking at acoustic versions of songs. From this I decided 'Kodaline - Love like this acoustic'.

Before I begin to storyboard my music video, I will create a script. In order to do this I will be using the program Celtx. This program will create a very professional looking script and this will help me get a basic idea of what I'm doing and the overall layout of the video making it easier when I come to create the storyboard. Within this program I will mainly be using: Scene heading, Action, Character, Dialog. This helps me to differentiate between the different sections, again creating a clear layout.

I have also been looking at the different filters I could add onto my video after shooting; this will add to the 1950s style and make it look very authentic and will reinforce the look I am trying to create. In particular I think '70s cinema' and 'GrassyKnoll' will look the best for what I plan to do however I will do a 'practice' shoot to experiment with shots and also the filters to see which will work best.
